Singer-songwriter David Rosales, who is also known for being half of popular local Americana duo David and Olivia, will be playing his solo music with his own band at Saint Rocke in Hermosa Beach Oct. 8 opening for Dustbowl Revival.

Rosales is the youngest of eight children and recalls music always being played around his home from his father’s love of big band era hits, his mom’s love of country radio and his older siblings blasting rock when their friends were around. After college, he was the lead singer of an LA hard rock band called Silent Treatment, which came to end at the same time the band members were turning 30.

“When I was in Silent Treatment, I was writing songs about death, sex, partying and girls cause that is what you write about in your 20s,” explains Rosales. “But when the band broke up I couldn’t stop writing music, it was just about more mature topics like love and emotions I was not comfortable with before. So once I had some of these new songs, I went into the studio to record them and see where they would go.”

Fall seems to be Rosales’ creative season when he holes himself up at home in Huntington Beach, CA with his wife, Kendra, two year old daughter Amelie, a pen, notebook, and his guitar. After a month of writing and organizing, Rosales comes up for air and begins fine-tuning the songs by playing them in a live audience setting.

“I find that I get really creative and catch a writing bug around the Fall,” explains Rosales, “I don’t know what it is, maybe it’s that I was born around that time, but I just get into this writing groove and settle in with a good batch of songs.”

Rosales spent most of 2013 promoting David and Olivia’s EP, On the Sea, and last year he released his first solo recording, Smile.

“I had seen a girl at a bar in LA and I asked her to play on a few songs on my first solo album, her name was Olivia,” Rosales remarks. “I knew she was the voice I was looking for on one song I had written so I started bringing her along to do gigs and people really responded well to us together.

“I always start out writing songs for the duet, but once I had a few songs written I felt they were better suited for a solo album so I told Olivia I was going to keep the songs for my solo project went into the studio to record my second solo album.”

Rosales’ sophomore solo album was recorded with the help of Night Owl Recorders’ producing partners, musicians and friends, Matt Grundy & Paul Clark (Donavon Frankenreiter). This new EP begins with the first single, “Too Young to Know Better.” With a serene, dream-folk vibe and a touch of country, the track swings into the EP’s up-tempo second single “Slice of Heaven,” featuring an infectious, fun-loving pop hook.

“I write hard rock songs, punk songs, I love song writing,” Rosales says. “My solo works are 100 percent completely me and there are so many facets of me that on this album I have blues songs, rock songs, country tunes, folky tunes. This seven song EP spans a whole sonic spectrum of music and I am really proud of that.”

Rosales just completed a tour playing several shows throughout California, including a special charity benefit with Sea Wolf. After touring through his home state, Rosales will celebrate the official release date of Along The Way with a featured North By North East (NXNE) showcase and Northeastern tour starting in Toronto then Montreal, Quebec and ending in Philadelphia.

“This is my first time on Canadian soil for NXNE, and it is just me and a guitar promoting the new solo album,” said Rosales. “This trip gives my wife and daughter an opportunity to join me on tour, which I am also really excited about. Otherwise I would be sitting alone drinking at a bar before and after my shows.”

OC Metal Band Returns To Rock Fans At Chain Reaction

Atreyu

Atreyu plays the Chain Reaction Sept. 11

Orange County metal band, Atreyu, recently announced their return from hiatus after 3 years off of touring and recording. Now the band has revealed that their first returning show will take place at Chain Reaction in Anaheim, CA on Sept. 11.

The reunited lineup, featuring vocalist Alex Varkatzas, drummer Brandon Saller, guitarists Dan Jacobs and Travis Miguel and bassist Marc Mcknight, is ready to get back out on the road. On July 1, 2014, the band officially announced that they’re back writing new music and plans to play live, starting with a headlining show at Chain Reaction, a venue they have not played in over a decade.

The band also recently released a new song on their Youtube channel titled “So Others May Live” that is also available for free download off their official website, http://atreyuofficial.com. Guitarist Jacobs took the time to speak with the OC Concert Guide about getting back to playing live and heading back into the studio to record album number six.

OCCG: How do you feel being from Orange County has shaped your sound through the years?
DJ: There were a lot of great bands coming up in Orange County at the time we first formed in 1999. Bands like Adamatium, Throwdown, 18 Vision, Death by Stereo were dominating the scene and definitely influenced us to go down a much heavier road then we were currently on. We started as a three-piece punk band called Retribution in 1996 and naturally changed our sound and name because of how influenced we were by Heavy music and the OC scene.

OCCG: Why did the group decide to take a break from recording and touring?
DJ: We we’re all just burnt out to be honest. We had been living in Never Never Land since we were in our late teens just touring the world and playing music for a living. I think we all needed to take a step back for a bit so that we could focus on our lives outside of the band and find ourselves as individuals. The break was very refreshing and the best thing that could of happened to us. We’re now all excited again for the first time in years and are ready to continue rocking this planet.

OCCG: Does the band members’ other musical projects tend to take time away from Atreyu?
DJ: For everyone in our band, Atreyu is the main priority. Brandon has the most active band outside of Atreyu called Hell or High Water (they’re amazing you should check them out) but they work their schedule around Atreyu’s Schedule, which works out great for both bands.

OCCG: Some musicians feel side projects takes away from an original band while others feel it helps musicians grow in their own music, which has been the case with Atreyu and why?
DJ: With anything you do in life, the more you do it, in one way or another, you will get better at it. I feel it’s very important to listen to, as well as write, all types of music so that you can broaden your musical vocabulary. The more you know, the more interesting your writing will become.

OCCG: The last few albums have been noted for having a more harder and darker sound, has the band always been going in that direction or did it just evolve through the recording process?
DJ: We have always had a dark, heavy vibe to most of our music so it’s something that we have naturally evolved into. Creates an awesome vibe both live and in recordings.

OCCG: Who has been the band’s favorite producer to work with? Which producer would you still like to record with?
DJ: I wouldn’t say we have a favorite just because we work better when we produce our own music and just work with a great engineer to record it. Our sound is strongly a combination of writing collaboration within the band so producers, as amazing as they can be at what they do, can unintentionally change our “recipe” and send our sound into an uncomfortable direction. As far as talent, inspiration, and the knowledge or producing we gained from working with them, John Feldman is hands down our favorite.

OCCG: What is the band’s favorite song to play live? Is there a song or songs you prefer not to play or rarely play and why?
DJ: We love playing songs that people can sing along and mosh too. That energy is what attracted us to this style of music so we want to give that back in our music. If I had to pick 3 favorite songs to play live I would say – My Fork in the Road, Right Side of the Bed, and Blow.

OCCG: How are the new recordings going? What can fans expect that is different from your past albums?
DJ: We have been working on some new material so that when it comes time to make a record we are ready to go. So far, everything is more like our records The Curse on Steroids. For fans of old Atreyu, it’s time to mosh.

OCCG: What is the band most looking forward at the Chain Reaction show?
DJ: Getting to be back on stage again with our brothers. We love playing music more than anything in the world, especially with the five of us, so we can’t wait to get back on stage and tear that mother down.

Female Guitarist Part Of Tony MacAlpine’s Power Group Tour

Nili Brosh

Nili Brosh plays with the Tony MacAlpine Band at Saint Rocke Aug. 13

Israeli-born now LA-based guitarist, Nili Brosh has created quite a stir among metal and fusions fans. For a 26-year-old young woman, her fast licks and ease through cord transitions has the leading players of these genre seeking her out to play along side them. Her blazing skills can be seen with the Tony MacAlpine Band that also includes Aquiles Priester on drums and Bjorn Englen on bass at Saint Rocke in Hermosa Beach on Wed, Aug. 13 and Ramona Mainstage on Fri, Aug 15.

“I always loved music and grew up listening to this style of music,” said Brosh. “Tony (MacAlpine) was a big inspirations of mine growing up and now I get to play his music along with him.”

Brosh was influenced by her older brother, Ethan’s love of the electric guitar as well as his love of 80s rock and fusion bands, of which MacAlpine’s albums were a big part of. In time, Brosh had developed her own appreciation and style for the electric guitar, and became an avid fan of heavy guitar driven music.

“All I wanted to do when I got my first electric guitar at age 12 was sit with my ear to the speaker and try to make out every note,” Brosh says. “I was still a part of a generation that did not have YouTube to mimic the way the musician is using their fingering when they play, so even if my interpretation of the notes was right I might have been wrong on the fingering positions, which might make a song harder to play.”

When Brosh was 12 years old, her brother got accepted to the famed Berklee School of Music in Boston, Mass so her parents uprooted the entire family and moved to Boston so her brother could attend the school. By then, she knew she would soon follow him and began preparing herself to audition taking guitar lessons from teachers who also taught at the school.

Brosh graduated Summa Cum Laude from Berklee in 2009 with a B.M in Professional Music. She also became one of the youngest faculty members in the Berklee summer guitar programs, where she has been teaching since age 19.

“I went to a high school that had students either going to Harvard or being seen as doing nothing with their lives so not many people understood why I was working towards going to Berklee,” explains Brosh. “Luckily, my brother had already been through the process so I just had to stay focused and I got accepted too.”

In 2010, Nili self-released her debut instrumental album, Through The Looking Glass, which features guitar legend Andy Timmons as a guest soloist, and the rhythm section of her own Nili Brosh Band. Brosh’s second album, “A Matter of Perception” is set for release on Sept 11, 2014 and features a variety of great players.

“I grew up listening to a lot of different styles of much, not just guitar driven bands and fusion,” Brosh says. “I like muli-tonal music like in Turkish or Middle Eastern music and 90s boy bands like Backstreet Boys. Max Martin’s arrangements are still great to listen to and when you can still hear something new in a pop song no matter how much you listen to it, you know it is good music.”

In January 2011, Brosh joined the progressive metal band “Seven The Hardway,” which featured guitar virtuoso MacAlpine (Steve Vai, Planet X, CAB), legendary drummer Virgil Donati (Planet X, CAB), and renowned vocalist Mark Boals (Yngwie Malmsteen, Uli Jon Roth). About a month later she was also asked to join MacAlpine’s touring solo band along with bassist Bjorn Englen (Yngwie Malmsteen), and famed drummer Marco Minnemann (Paul Gilbert, The Aristocrats).

“I get asked in a lot of interviews what it is like to be just now touring with Tony, but I have actually been playing with him since 2011,” said Brosh. “For me it feels like we have been playing together for a while now.”

Since graduating from Berklee, Brosh has performed with Stu Hamm (Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Eric Johnson), Guthrie Govan (Asia), Andy Timmons (Danger Danger, Olivia Newton-John), The Iron Maidens (world’s only all-female tribute to Iron Maiden), The Aristocrats, and has opened for artists such as Terry Ilous (XYZ), Joey Molland (Badfinger), and Pat Travers. She also tours in her brother’s band, The Ethan Brosh Band, and they were the opener for Yngwie Malmsteen on his 2013 U.S. tour.

Pacific Symphony Performs Classic Hits by George Gershwin

Angela Brown and Kevin Deas bring George Gershwin's Porgy and Bess to life at Verizon Amphitheater July 20

Angela Brown and Kevin Deas bring George Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess to life at Verizon Amphitheater July 20

Pacific Symphony will take on some of George Gershwin’s classic jazz hits this summer during the Mercedes-Benz presented Summer Festival 2014 with “Gershwin’s Greats.” Enjoy a night under the stars with timeless jazz pieces performed by the Pacific Symphony and incredible special guests on July 20 at 7:30 p.m. at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre in Irvine.

“Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess can be a more vocally challenging theatrical concert to sing than most Operas,” explains Internationally acclaimed American lead bass-baritones singer Kevin Deas. “Most of the concert the vocalist must perform Porgy’s part on their knees, which makes it more demanding on the performer.”

Gershwin was a composer who took Broadway by storm with his work defining the Americana Era by selling out opera houses and concert halls. The concert is spotlighting his strive for always challenging himself by creating outstanding pieces ranging from different styles.

The classic Americana program which is led by Music Director Carl St.Clair will perform some of Gershwin’s greatest pieces such as “Rhapsody In Blue,” “An American In Paris,” “Porgy and Bess,” and “Strike Up The Band.”

“St.Clair really knows his American composers and their compositions,” said Deas. “I have performed the part of Porgy with many symphonies around the world and no conductor is more connected with Americana music.”

This night will also feature special guests to perform with the Pacific Symphony such as Jeffrey Biegel who is considered to be one of the greatest pianists of our time. He has received critical acclaim and praise all over the world for his amazing technique.

Singer Angela Brown who has sheer vocal power and is the ideal Americano dramatic soprano for the part will perform the soprano voice of Bess.

“I am so excited to be sharing the stage again with Angela in the part of Bess,” exclaimed Deas. “What an amazing force of singing. She is a real treasure in this performance!”

Neo-Classical Guitarist Headlines ‘Guitar God’ Tour

Yngwie Malmsteen

Yngwie Malmsteen headlines Guitar Gods Tour at the Observatory July 2

The king of neo-classical shred guitar, legendary guitar virtuoso Yngwie Malmsteen, will return to stages across North America this summer for the first “Guitar Gods” festival tour. Bringing together such accomplished axemen as Uli Jon Roth (Scorpions, Electric Sun), Gary Hoey (“Hocus Pocus”) and Bumblefoot (Guns N’ Roses), Malmsteen will headline an epic celebration, six hours of the instrument for a full evening of guitar pyrotechnics.

The “Guitar Gods” tour is created and produced by April Malmsteen, Yngwie’s wife and manager, and is presented in proud partnership with Guitar Center. “Guitar Gods” tour’s first show is at The Observatory in Santa Ana on Wed, July 2.

This is no surprise that Malmsteen is headlining this tour as the founder of neo-classical rock shows off his lightening fast licks playing songs off his new album “Spellbound.”

“This is the first time I played every instrument myself,” proclaimed Malmsteen referring to the songs off his latest release. “Even the keyboard parts were done by me in my home studio.”

Malmsteen has a full, professional, state-of-the-art recording studio in his home and he does not want anyone to confuse that with just a tiny, small-scale recording room. He has always played the bass along with the guitar parts on all of his albums, but on this one he is the drummer, keyboardist and singer as well.

“I approach my music as a symphony with all of the performers having their parts and only one place for a soloist,” he explains. “Stylistically, I script everything and look for well-trained musicians that play what they are told to play and do their part.”

Malmsteen starting learning music theory by the time he learned to speak his native language of Swedish. He grew up in Stockholm, Sweden to a very musical family. He recalls jamming with his brother and grandfather, who were both drummers.

“I learned Classical music first being raised in a family of opera singers and loved Baroque and Romantic composers,” says Malmsteen. “I really enjoyed playing blues on the guitar, but five cords were just not enough for me so I started to transcribe classical on the instrument.”

In regards to his indented fret board, Malmsteen created this style of guitar while working as an apprentice in a guitar shop and found the fret board helped his control over speed and pitch while he played.

When asked if he has perfect pitch, Malmsteen exclaimed, “Of course I have perfect pitch! It’s a blessing and a curse. Music can’t just be a background noise to me.”

Check out his latest recording, “Spellbound,” which is now available only as a digital download on iTunes.

KC Rappers Deliver Heavy Midwest Beats Out West

Ces Cru

Ces Cru with special guest Info Gates play LVCS June 21, Los Globos June 22 and Vibe Bar June 23

Kansas City (KC) duo Ces Cru’s debut full-length album on Strange Records “Constant Energy Struggles” is out and the duo is taking their music on the road playing in Las Vegas at LVCS June 21, in LA at Los Globos June 22 and at Vibe Bar in Riverside on June 23. This is Ces Cru’s first headlining tour since signing to Strange Records and joining them on the road is special guest KC rapper Info Gates.

Ces Cru is comprised of rappers Godemis and Ubiquitous who for the past dozen years have operated mostly as a duo, which is all that remained of a much larger Ces Cru, which at one time include six full-time rappers. Godemis was impressed by Ubi’s skills during a recording session and invited him to join the group. As time went on, members moved, moved on, went to jail – leaving just Godemis and Ubiquitous.

“Ces Cru was a collective of like-minded individuals,” says Godemis, a founding member of the group since high school. When he first began rhyming, he was simply doing cover versions of albums like Mac Mall’s Illegal Business?”

Ubiquitous, a Colorado native who grew up on acts like Kool Moe Dee, LL Cool J and the Fat Boys as well as metal, punk rock, ska and electronica, moved to Kansas City in 2000 and had already been polishing his rap skills over jungle beats.

Together, the duo independently released 2004’s “Capture Enemy Soldiers” (featuring appearances from former member Sorceress) and “The Playground” in 2009 before signing with Strange Music at the end of 2011. Ces Cru has released a pair of solo mixtapes as well, Godemis’ The Deevil and Ubiquitous’ Matter Don’t Money and the EP, “13.”

Info Gates is a producer, songwriter and emcee from Kansas City and the first artist to win both the Scion Sudden-Death Emcee Battle and ButtonPush Production Battles (2006-08). Gates has produced a vast amount of material for a broad array of artists including an appearance on Tech N9NE’s highly successful “Something Else” LP, on the song “Colorado,” along with the Strange Music roster and Grammy-Winner B.O.B.

Info Gates’ unique Drum-frenzy style of production, as well as witty, comical lyrics rarely cease to shine on record. OC Concert Guide was able to capture a conversation with Godemis and Info Gates about making music and life on the road.

Info Gate: So how does it feel to headline your first national tour and how has the tour been so far?
Godemis: It feels amazing. Its been a long time coming but it feels really good. Weve got so much love so far. We toured the south and the east coast already and it was all just amazing. We sold out our first show in boston last week and that was really surreal. They were rapping along with us like crazy it felt really good to see.

Info Gate: Explain the name of the tour?
Godemis: It’s the Constant Energy Struggles tour. That’s the name of our last album. But were also out promoting codename ego stripper, the new one, which drops in August.

Info Gate: How do you feel about the new album?
Godemis: Man I think it’s the best album we’ve made. I really do. We broke thru a little bit on the Strange roster with the last one, but man, this one felt really good. Different. But still noticably Ces Cru style at the same time. Ubi is really rappin hard on there. The beats are ill too. Se7en did the majority, with help from Leonard Destroy and obviously info gates, but the album couldn’t have come out better. Can’t wait to give it to the fans.

Info Gate: What’s your favorite track?
Godemis: Haha that’s like really impossible to say. This joint sound bite, that one goes real tough. We got some great features too. Man, I dunno I love it all haha

Info Gate: Sounds dope. I mean I’ve heard it and I’ll agree too. The whole record really does go. I like sound bite alot too. So what would you tell fans who are about to see you and info gates on the west coast to expect?
Godemis: Strange hop. Sheer fuckery. Haha. I mean we all go hard and were all cut from the same cloth. Info gets it wet, you know what I mean? He has some stuff a lot of our fans will know and some they won’t. But you’ll see undeniable hip-hop talent from him. Me and Ubi, I mean, if u don’t already know I feel bad for you. Haha. We just do what we do. Get wavy and rap real hard. It’s a guaranteed good time, especially for fans of good hip hop.

Godemis: Haha okay. So, what’s been the best memory so far on the road?
Info Gate: Man, I dunno. Been movin so fast so far. I guess maybe the bum in Houston.

Godemis: Haha right?
Info Gate: Ya that was funny. Obviously we know it, but yeah we were pulling the van out of a slim alley and a drunk dude who seemed to be homeless, runs up screamin “Cut it! Cut it! You got it!” which we totally didn’t haha. So ya he was just totally hurting more than he was helping. And he was super duper loud. After we got out he asked us for a tip too haha. That was funny. That and man sellin out Boston. Boston was so turnt up and a real nice surprise.

Godemis: Hell yeah… So the new album, “Make things do stuff.” Shit goes. Speak on it.
Info Gate: Haha. Uh yeah it goes man. I’m real happy with it. It’s really a lot of me. My last one had a ton of features. Not this one. Only 2, you obviously, and Bre the first lady, an amazing singer from KC. Was glad to finally work with her man. But yeah it’s 15 tracks. It’s selling really well so far. Goin up you could say.

Godemis: Right. Well what do u look forward to or see in the future?
Info Gate: hopefully just more of this. More love. More music. Im always looking ahead and this tour is really giving me hope for both Ces and myself. They really recognize our craft out here. It’s such a good feeling. I just wanna keep making organic music and spreading in as far as it’ll go. That’s what im put on this earth to do. I really believe that.

Godemis: Word up brother. Well yo. We got a fuckin show to do here in toledo right? so with that said, come see Info Gates and Ces Cru in a city near you, know what I mean? Jason Deevil aka Jason Hasslehoff if you nasty, signing out. Ya’ll know what it is. And oh, go cop that deevil 6.0 like yesterday! Bddddat!
Info Gate: Yeah what he said. Come see us. And swoop that deevil 6.0, the remixed interpretation of Godemis’ “The Deevil” mixtape. Just dropped on iTunes June 1. Shit goes. We out chea. KCMO hip hop worldwide baby.

Super Group HBC Plays Two Nights In Studio City

HBC

HBC features Scott Henderson, Dennis Chambers and Jeff Babko playing the Baked Potato May 21 and 22.

Jazz Fusion super group, HBC, will be playing a very rare two-night engagement at the Baked Potato in Studio City May 21 and 22. HBC stands for the last names of each powerhouse player in this dynamic trio that is guitarist Scott Henderson (Joe Zawinul, Chick Corea, Tribal Tech), Bassist Jeff Babko (Jimmy Kimmel Live, Larry Carlton, Robben Ford) and Drummer Dennis Chambers (Steely Dan, Carlos Santana, Parliament).

“I don’t really like the Super Group Syndrome we are normally billed as,” said Henderson. “Jeff and Dennis are just really fun people to hang out with, and it transfers to the music when we play together.”

The group as been playing together worldwide for the last five and a half years off their only self-titled album of 1970s’ Super Group covers, but this is the first time the group has played together in Southern California. The album as well as the live shows feature songs from what Henderson called 2nd generation jazz music like Wealthy Report, Herbie Hancock’s Headhunters and Wayne Shorter.

“I like to call the songs we play the Jazz Standards of our generation,” explains Henderson. “We do more funk jazz, although we like to mix it up and add in some swing tunes too. Dennis is an amazing funk drummer, but both he and Babko can swing great too.”

Each of these musicians play in a variety of other groups with original music, but according to Henderson, with himself based in Los Angeles, Chambers in Baltimore and Babko in Florida there is just no time to get together, learn and rehearse each other’s original tunes. Instead, they pick some covers that they want to jam together on and rehearse those, then play them live.

“Our live shows are not for the jazz purists, we really let loose and give each tune our own voice,” says Henderson. “Playing one style or genre of music is just not me, I don’t like to pigeon hole myself and I like players who can play a large variety of styles like Dennis and Jeff.

I like to pick and play songs that originally do not have guitar players and I add my own interpretation to a keyboard or horn part on the guitar. Being a guitar player, I do not like playing other great guitar players music. I just would feel like a poor imitation of that great musicians work.”

The group does not want to limit themselves to classic funk and jazz tunes since they are all so well versed on their instruments they can pretty much play any kind of music. They have even integrated a few Beatles tunes into this tour and knock around the idea of covering big pop hits like ‘What is Hip’ at some point into their set list.

“These guys are such great musicians to play with that as a group we can really stretch the boundaries of any music we play,” Henderson added. “Dennis is such an amazing drummer he adds his own technique and style to any form of music. I will be the first to admit that sometimes Dennis loses me in all his grooves. Any musician would get lost with Dennis, he is just throwing so many grooves all over the place it’s amazing.

Basically, we just like to come together as musicians, play and have a good time with the music.”

Click here for more information on the full line-up, schedules and festival activities http://www.joshuatreemusicfestival.com. English took some time out of his busy schedule to talk to the OC Concert Guide about running a music festival and what is happening at this year’s event.

OCCG: When did the idea for the festival first come about and why in Joshua Tree?
BE: I have been traveling to music festivals selling organic coffee/tea/espresso with JavaGogo, a coffee company I started in ’93. I have been to over 600 music festivals and counting. Big, small, purple, yellow, all types. When I woke up one day at the Joshua Tree Lake Campground, I looked around and thought this would be a great place for a music festival. Beautiful place, amazing people. so I moved there and started a festival within 4 months… that was 12 years and 19 festivals ago (we have a fest in MAY and in OCT).

OCCG: Who was apart of the first line-up and what band has returned to play the festival the most?
BE: Orgone, Hamsa Lila, Medicine Drum and Mamasutra were some of the bands at the first fest. We strive to turn folks on to new music each festival, so we don’t have a lot of repeat performances. That said, a few of the artists performing here at the next fest have performed here once or twice before… Trevor Green, Stephen Kent, Scott Pemberton…

OCCG: What has been some of the most interesting experiences you have had running a camping festival?
BE: The most interesting part of a multi day camp out music festival is the human interaction that takes place. You engage others over and over at different times of day the conversations run deep. Positivity reigns supreme due to the inspiring music in a magical setting, and folks are on vacation, so they are not glued to their cell phone or laptop or working at home, etc. Folks leave having had seriously powerful positive life changing experiences! To witness that and provide the space for it is a big thrill.

OCCG: Do you always have a festival line-up worked out prior to booking acts or does it kinda come together based on who is touring during the time of the festival?
BE: I have a LONG LONG list of favorites artists that I’d love to have perform, but I also strive for a certain mix of styles. The festival is like a live mixed tape and you want folks to go on a musical journey. So, we start with our favorite list and see whose available/interested, who we can afford and go on down the line like that.

OCCG: The festival has a very unique experience for the bands backstage, with message tents and relaxing areas outside. Was that always a part of the festival or did that evolve in time?
BE: Artists have a hard time differentiating between artists and festival-goers. We have no VIP or backstage area. Everyone is a VIP, so the co-mingling and interaction is great. Our crew of friends and family are down to earth, fun loving souls, so the artists immediately feel at home. Because of that, most every time, they turn in a supremely inspired set!

OCCG: What do you hope festival-goers get out of the 3-day festival?
BE: No less than a life affirming, positive open hearted feeling that they take back home and share with their friends and family and co-workers.

OCCG: Why do you feel it is so important to work with independent, unknown artists?
BE: There are SO many talented performers who will never be heard. It is part of our mission to give those artists a stage to do their thing and share their passionate performances. These bands are hungry, driven, determined and spilling over with creativity. Their shows reflect that. We’ve had many bands play here as unknowns, and now they are extremely popular, like:

Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros, Avett Brothers, Brett Dennen, Trampled by Turtles, Trombone Shorty, Deer Tick and more.

OCCG: This year the festival has yoga a big part of everyday, how did this idea get implemented into the festival?
BE: We’ve had Yoga classes at the fest for years, but as more people have a regular practice, we accommodate that by having amazing instructors leading classes from sunrise to sunset.

OCCG: While running the festival, do you get any downtime to enjoy the festival? What part of the festival do you enjoy the most?
BE: My goal is to dance and enjoy myself as much as possible at every festival. Half a year of planning, or more, goes into it, so I’d be crazy not to enjoy it! We have an amazing crew of family and friends that manage all the different departments, so I really have very little work to do during the festival 🙂

NANCE Plays Blue Beet In Balboa Peninsula

NANCE

NANCE mixes up a night at Blue Beet May 1

Riley Nance aka NANCE is an up-and-coming EDM Producer who will be showcasing his original remixes and DJ style at Blue Beet in the Balboa Peninsula Thurs, May 1. Hailing from Newport Beach, Nance is familiar with the OC electronic scene having performed at popular venues such as Sutra, Ten Nightclub, and the Yost Theater; and with artists such as Lil Debbie.

In addition to DJing, NANCE has produced some notable tracks that have made their way to the Beatport top playlists. One of his latest, a remix of Tiesto’s “Take Me,” charted sixth place in plays as part of a Beatport remix contest. Another one of his remixes, a remix of Bass Kleph’s “Less is More”, charted 1st in plays.

The OC Concert Guide had the chance to ask Nance about his Beatport successes and future plans for his music.

OCCG: What were the biggest influences growing up in Orange County that got you into DJing?
RN: To be honest I have only been DJing for just a bit longer than 2 years but, I have a fairly established musical background aside from “edm.” I originally started being in bands playing several different instruments and singing, playing shows and gigging since I was just 10 years old. After many years of being in bands, playing and writing original music my bands decided we would to turn to recording our own music and without any significant funding the only option seemed to be, well doing it ourself. As time went on I faced many struggles, often with band members: being undedicated enough, not talented enough, not passionate enough, musical differences, drug problems, the list really goes on. What I found in Orange County is that really what I came to enjoy was producing music, why, because with a computer your only limit is yourself, the tools are there, you don’t need to rely on other “band members” if you’re falling short its your own deal, get better, be better, all the tools are there, I liked that. Producing music is what led me to electronic music, which led me to wanting to DJ.

OCCG: Which track has gone through the most creative transformation from when you started working on it to when you finished?
RN: At this point in time I haven’t actually released any original music, however I have an almost completed album I’m very excited to to release in the near future, I have been working with a few local artists that will be featured on it! On this album there will be a track titled “Alone” that I’ve been working on for over 2 years that has had 4 vocalists try to take it by the reigns, none of whom succeeded, most of what I produce is 128 bpm house oriented music but I do eventually want to change the face of electronic music and this track is really aside at least most of the electronic music I have ever heard, I believe this track will be a part of what I will Innovate within the genre or category of electronic music, and I believe this song would definitely be my answer to this question!

OCCG: What advice would you give DJs starting out who want to remix other musicians work?
RN: Make sure you have the musical knowledge when remixing a song to do so within the correct key and scale or a greater knowledge of music to know how to change it, aside from that I’d just say when you’re mixing have some decent speakers and compare your tracks to other tracks that you know sound great in the club or at the festival!

OCCG: How was being in the 1st in play spot on Beatport?
RN: Honestly I love my followers, Beatport is a huge site for DJs and I was so surprised to get first place in plays in the BassKleph contest and even more I was surprised that in the Tiesto – Take Me contest I got 6th out of 3,589 applicants In plays, I’m looking forward to many more of the Beatport contests and I hope my supporters come through and support me again, thanks guys!

OCCG: What do you feel set you apart from other DJs on the Beatport contest?
RN: Well I’d like to hope that it was the music, but I created event pages on Facebook and a few other social media sites asking friends and fans to engage and help me get plays!

OCCG: You like to work with a lot of different genres within Electronic music, how do you decide which genre works for the song you are creating at the time?
RN: Well to tell the truth every time I sit down I start from scratch, sometimes I start with a general idea, like if a song originally was a house track sometimes I feel like maybe people would like to hear a dubstep rendition, but mostly I stick to house oriented music and when I dub, I dub in 128 bpm 😉 however wait for my album to hear a few tracks breaking outside my box!

OCCG: How do you pick a song to remix and make it your own?
RN: At this point in time I’m not a huge DJ or Producer, I really pick from a combination of what I like and what is fairly commercial, or when there are contests that will spread my name. As I progress on and become more successful I will probably start picking songs that most people haven’t heard to remix and hopefully people will like what they hear!

OCCG: What are your plans for the rest of 2014? New music? More tours?
RN: I’m really hoping this is going to be a huge year for me, my album should be out, and hopefully released on a major label, I have several remixes in the vault coming out for my followers and tons and tons of shows coming. For now I’m in the studio recording and playing occasionally but as soon as my album is released it will be tours and shows from Orange County to Chicago.

Mastodon Plays On Sunset At Club Nokia

Mastodon

Mastodon at Club Nokia in LA May 2

Known for their theme-inspired albums turned into heavy-edged, in your face riffs, Mastodon returns to Southern California with a show at Club Nokia on the Sunset Strip Fri, May 2.

Last June OC Concert Guide spoke with Mastodon’s drummer Brann Dailor as they toured as part of the Mayhem festival or as Dailor called the tour, “Heavy Metal Summer Camp.” Here is a recap of his interview about their music and being on a big metal festival tour.

“It’s like a parking lot party everyday of the Mayhem tour,” said Dailor. “Someone at the buses in the backstage always has a barbecue going. It’s a great band hang out.”

Dailor says it is a time when the band looks forward to meeting with and hanging out with fans too. The band just got back from a three-week tour in Europe so they feel ready to hit the U.S. tour circuit.

“We are excited to be on tour with some old friends we toured Mayhem with in 2008,” said Dailor. “And there are definitely some bands that we get to be on the road with this time that we like a lot and have never toured with or seen live. Like Battlecross, we haven’t Battlecrossed them on a tour yet (Dailor jokes with a chuckle).”

According to Dailor, the first few legs of the tour are when the bands and sound team do all gear and sound checks. Then it is the same thing everyday as far as performance goes, by the third or fourth festival the bands and crew are all dialed in and ready to play.

The band’s last album, The Hunter, came out in 2011 so Dailor hinted that the band was ready to start recording their next set of themed songs for a new album hopefully coming out sometime in 2014. They still don’t have a producer set up yet, but he explained that the producer is a good set of extra ears, although they feel confident in their product regardless of who is producing the recordings.

“We get a good mix and recording because we already know what we want by the time we get in the studio,” said Dailor. “I get my inspiration from the on-hold music when waiting on the phone because it is so distorted…(ha-ha)”

Dailor was happy to display his, as he put it, “false modesty” and cheeky side explaining his fictitious side gig was designing and patenting a new baby product called the Baby Bubble. A product he hopes will protect all babies from any harm outside his or her bubble. Fans can look forward to seeing this new idea hit stores soon. (ha-ha)
